An interesting article which bears out my experience in rural and urban Kenya. Despite the claims made by the Kenyan government concerning progress made toward the MDG goal for [free] universal primary school education [allegedly 94%] the truth is markedly different. Each week sees more teachers dying of HIV/AIDS related illness, going without pay and having to 'teach' over 100 infants in the same room [an impossible task]. Education is rarely free despite the claims to the contrary with tuition and uniform fees being common for primary schools across the country. More work needs to be done to bring the facts to the world's attention with less trust placed on the dubious claims relating to MDG progress.
As always a good and honest article - thank you. I am so glad I found this site via the Guardian development microsite.
